They can be both translated as ‘what’ in many situations. Do you remember the rules to use one or the other?
1- Qué/cuál + verb ser
Qué + es/son – is for definitions.
E.g.: ¿Qué es el tequila? (Define ‘tequila’)
Cuál/cualés + es/son – is for information.
E.g.: ¿Cuál es tu teléfono? (Tell me your phone number, not define ‘phone number’)
2- Qué + noun
Qué always comes before nouns in expressions like:
- ¿Qué carro tienes? ‘What car do you have?’
Qué asks a question with very large or infinite choices for an answer. Cuál asks a question with a definite amount of choices for an answer. E.g:
- ¿Qué quieres? ‘What do you want’ (it can be ANYTHING)
- ¿Cuál quieres? ‘Which one do you want’ (there is a limited amount of choices)
